Who We Are

A Family Business Built on Getting It Right

Scientific Horticulture was founded with a belief that most pest control companies were asking the wrong question. Instead of “what kills this pest fastest,” we ask: what solves this problem without creating a new one?

Rooted in Saint James, we’ve watched Long Island’s North Shore landscape change over the decades — the deer pressure, the tick populations, the invasive pests that have arrived in new climates. We’ve also watched what conventional chemical programs do to the soil, the water table, and the backyard ecosystems that families share with honeybees, songbirds, and fireflies.

We chose a different path. Every product in our program is plant-derived or naturally occurring. Every application is timed to minimize impact on beneficial insects. And every recommendation we make is one we’d make for our own property — because for us, this community is our property too.

Why Garlic Oil Outperforms Synthetic Chemicals

Our signature garlic oil spray isn’t a compromise — it’s a genuinely superior solution for the kind of pest control Long Island homeowners actually need.

Allicin, the active compound in garlic oil, is one of nature’s most powerful pest deterrents. It disrupts insect sensory systems — particularly the chemoreceptors that mosquitoes and ticks use to locate hosts — without acting as a systemic toxin that moves through soil, groundwater, or plant tissue.

Synthetic pyrethroids and organophosphates, by contrast, work through nervous system toxicity. They kill broadly — target pests and non-target insects alike — and their residues don’t disappear after the spray dries. They bind to soil particles, leach toward drainage systems, and accumulate in the invertebrate communities that form the base of the food chain.

On Long Island, this matters more than almost anywhere else in the country. Suffolk County sits above a sole-source aquifer — the only drinking water supply for roughly 1.5 million people. There are no backup aquifers here. What goes into the ground eventually reaches the water supply, and no lawn is worth that risk.

Garlic oil breaks down through natural oxidation within days of application. It leaves no persistent residue in soil. It is not toxic to birds, mammals, fish, or aquatic invertebrates at application concentrations. And critically — it is not harmful to bees and pollinators when applied correctly, outside of bloom periods and during low-activity hours.

What We Will Never Do

There are certain shortcuts that make pest control cheaper and faster that we will never take — because the short-term savings aren’t worth the long-term cost to this community, this water, and this land.

This isn’t idealism. It’s the operating principle we built this business around, and we’d rather lose a customer to a competitor who uses cheaper synthetics than compromise it.

No Synthetic Pyrethroids

We will never apply bifenthrin, permethrin, or similar synthetic compounds — regardless of efficacy claims or price advantage.

No Neonicotinoids

Imidacloprid and similar systemic insecticides have documented impacts on bee populations. They are not part of our program under any circumstances.

No Unnecessary Applications

We don’t apply treatments to justify a service visit. If we inspect a property and find low pest pressure, we tell you and reschedule. No upsells. No fear tactics.

No Aquifer Compromise

We will never use products with documented groundwater contamination potential in Suffolk County — full stop, regardless of how they’re labeled or marketed.
